What to Expect - Voice Lessons (Singing 101)

As a beginner, you can expect an environment that fosters positivity, inspiration, knowledge, and enjoyment. Most importantly, our lessons will provide a judgment-free zone, where everyone feels comfortable and encouraged to learn. Making mistakes is an integral part of the learning process, and I urge you to embrace this aspect of your development with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

Throughout our beginner lessons, you will acquire a broad range of skills that will empower you to become a skilled and confident singer. We will initiate our journey by discussing your motivation for pursuing voice lessons and your short-term and long-term objectives. Together, we will devise a strategy to achieve these goals and make your dreams a reality.

We will delve into the fundamentals of posture and correct breathing techniques, which are essential for effective singing. The proper use of the diaphragm is crucial, as it enables you to produce good air support when singing higher and longer notes. Moreover, proper breathing techniques will help prevent vocal strain and potential injury to your vocal cords, allowing you to sing with freedom and expression.

We will explore your vocal range and voice type to determine your categorization. (Please note that this classification may evolve as you progress.) I will emphasize the importance of diction and enunciation in singing, as clear articulation is vital for conveying the intended message and connecting with your audience.

Our lessons will incorporate vocal warm-ups, scale exercises, and training on slides, vibrato, rhythm, pitch, tone, and music theory (reading sheet music). These elements are the building blocks for becoming a skilled and experienced singer, and I am excited to share them with you.

I will assign two songs for you to perform at our yearly recital and any other venue of your choice, depending on your goals and aspirations. We will rehearse these songs together and discuss your performance, exploring ways to enhance your skills moving forward. Additional songs will be introduced as we progress, and I am confident that you will excel in all of them.

To supplement our lessons, you will receive worksheets on music theory and MP3 recordings of scale progressions and songs to practice. (I recommend practicing at home three times a week, for at least 30 minutes each session, with regular breaks.) We will regularly review your progress, set new objectives, and maintain a file to track your development, celebrating your successes and working through challenges together.

This is merely the beginning of our journey together, and I am eager to help you discover your unique voice and unlock your full potential. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask.

I look forward to working with you!- Sonya
